Barbie is getting an update.
Mattel intends to ship a Barbie MP3 player this July with 512 MB of onboard memory and an expandable miniSD slot that holds up to a 2 GB memory card. The device, which is shaped and looks like a Barbie doll, can play MP3 or WMA files, comes with Windows Media Player 11 and has a built-in rechargeable lithium polymer battery that charges via the USB port.
A belt clip, earbuds and storage case are included with the 4.5 inch MP3 player, which will list for just under $60. Accessories include fashions and pets.
Along with the MP3 player, Mattel is launching this week a virtual world that it says is designed as a safe place for girls to play and interact online at: www.BarbieGirls.com.
