Clear Channel Swipes Braves From Cox

Clear Channel is getting in on the Braves action. The Atlanta Braves baseball team has won a lot of fan interest around the country thanks to its carriage on TBS cable television. Now the ball club has signed a five-year deal making Clear Channel its radio partner beginning in 2005.
The games will air in Atlanta on WGST(AM) and WKLS(FM), and the participants also are thinking beyond the home city.
“The Atlanta Braves is one of the very few sports teams with national cache,” Clear Channel President/CEO John Hogan stated in the announcement.
The companies said, “The Braves will have access to Clear Channel Radio’s complete local, regional and national footprint, complemented by the promotional resources of Clear Channel Outdoor and Clear Channel Entertainment.”
According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Braves are leaving WSB(AM), which is owned by Cox. WGST also held the Braves radio rights for three years in the early 1990s.
