Clinton Signs Off On LPFM Changes

President Clinton has signed into law the last of the 13 annual appropriations bills passed by lawmakers. The legislation included the appropriation for the Departments of Justice/State/Commerce that contained language restoring existing channel protections for full-power stations and LPFMs when those licenses are allocated.
In remarks prepared for the signing ceremony, Clinton stated he was disappointed “Congress chose to restrict the voice of our nation’s churches, schools, civic organizations and community groups.”
Calling LPFM “an important tool in fostering diversity on the airwaves,” the President urged the FCC to license as many LPFMs as possible within the limitations imposed by Congress.
The action comes as the FCC announced it would accept its third batch of LPFM applications Jan 16-22.
