College Station Drops Out

Another college radio station has stopped Webcasting, citing music licensing costs.
The Stevens Point (Wis.) Journal reports that WWSP(FM), which broadcasts from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, ceased its Internet simulcast on Sept. 1.
The paper quoted the station’s faculty adviser saying the decision came down to economics and bureaucracy.
“To continue broadcasts over the Web, WWSP(FM) would have to pay $500 per year to the licensing companies, plus a lump-sum payment of $2,000 for music broadcasts dating back to 1999,” the paper reported – too much money and paperwork for the all-volunteer station.
