Drop in Local Sales Zeroes Out Ad Growth in August

RAB officials find reason for optimism in their latest statistics, even though U.S. radio sales were flat in August and the local component actually dropped.
Local sales, which had been flat for three months, fell 2% compared to August of last year; national sales were up 5%.
For the year, radio is up 2%, with national ad sales leading the way at 8% and local up 1%.
“Radio continues to work its way through the erratic economy,” said Gary Fries, president and CEO of the Radio Advertising Bureau.
“While business is being placed very close to the start time, it appears that September will be a positive month and the remainder of fourth quarter continues to strengthen.”
