The FCC eased some rules for radio broadcasters by allowing stations to operate and restore communications as needed in areas impacted by Hurricane Rita. The commission is giving requests for temporary facilities or modifications to existing facilities expedited processing. STA requests are also being handled quickly and the agency is allowing FMs to erect temporary antennas without prior authority from the FCC. AMs can use a horizontal or vertical wire or a non-directional vertical element of a directional antenna as an emergency antenna. AMs may also remain on full power at night to air emergency information.
