Dr. Benjamin Lawson Hooks, the first African American FCC commissioner, will be honored in a ceremony at the commission Wednesday (July 19).
The agency and the FCC Benjamin Hooks Chapter of Blacks in Government recognize Hooks as an advocate for equal opportunity in the communications industry. They also are honoring what the describe as his historic contributions as executive director of the NAACP, judge, professor, attorney, ordained minister, orator and civil rights pioneer.
President Nixon appointed Hooks as a commissioner in 1972. He served until 1977.
