News out of Dearborn, Mich., was welcome in Charlotte, N.C., this week.

HD Radio is now available as a dealer-installed option on most model-year 2008 Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles. Ford Motor Co. announced that digital radio can also be installed on many models from model-years 2005–07. The announcement came as radio industry leaders and technology companies were participating in The NAB Radio Show in Charlotte.

Participation of a “Big Three” automaker is seen as an important development in the progress of the technology’s market penetration.

“We believe HD Digital Radio will be an important part of Ford’s commitment to delivering innovations with mass appeal,” stated Kim Irwin, an official with Ford’s Customer Service Division. Irwin cited “dramatically improved audio, text and data features of HD Digital Radio — along with its hundreds of new radio stations.” Price points will vary by dealership.
