WTMJ(AM) in Milwaukee has taken on an “Honor Flight” project.
“Stars and Stripes Honor Flights” take World War II veterans — and terminally ill vets from other wars — to Washington to visit memorials and Arlington National Cemetery.
WTMJ’s current campaign runs through July 4 and has raised close to a half million dollars in the past 18 months.
During a recent radio/TV push, midday host Charlie Sykes, afternoon host Jeff Wagner, WTMJ(TV) staff and local sponsors raised $52,000 in a three-hour period.
Honor Flight tours include visits to the World War II Memorial, the Air Force Memorial, the Iwo Jima Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery along with a reception at the Air & Space Museum.
WTMJ(AM) and its sister TV outlet are owned by the Journal Broadcast Group. The company is headquartered in Milwaukee.
