IBiquity Says Portable Sales ‘Exceed Expectations,’ Cites Supply Shortages

Best Buy is working to get consumers devices ASAP, says iBiquity

When is a product shortage welcome news? When you’re iBiquity Digital and you’re talking about sales of the latest receiver.

The HD Radio developer said sales of the new Insignia armband HD Radio portable sold by Best Buy have “exceeded expectations” in the model’s first two weeks on the market, though the company did not name a specific figure. We’re betting iBiquity is not unhappy to report that units seem to be showing some legs off the retail shelf.

It said there are shortages in some Best Buy locations and notes the device is on backorder at bestbuy.com. “Best Buy is working hard to get more devices available to consumers ASAP,” iBiquity stated in a newsletter.

Radio stations have been giving away the units in promotions, and the HD Radio Alliance commercial campaign highlights the product in ads airing on more than 600 stations in 100 markets, according to the technology developer.

The Insignia NS-HD01 portable player has a built-in, rechargeable Lithium-ion battery that can be charged through a computer USB, wall, or car charger; a color LCD screen, 10 presets, and a 3.5 mm jack output. An armband and USB cable is included.

RW’s Leslie Stimson reported recently on her experience with the unit in stationary and mobile environments.
