KQTM On-Air Using Generator Power After Copper Theft

Theft affects entire building for Class A FM ESPN affiliate

KQTM(FM), Rio Rancho, N.M. is on the air with a generator.

The station was a victim of copper wire theft, according to Albuquerque, N.M. news reports.

The Class A FM ESPN affiliate was knocked off the air early Monday morning and returned on-air that night.

General Manager David Dominguez told KOB Eyewitness News 4it appears the thieves cut the station’s copper wire, hooked it up to a truck and yanked it from the ground.

Dominguez estimates it will cost around $20,000 to replace the wire and repair the damage. The theft left the station’s entire building, which also houses other businesses, without power as well.

A note on the station’s websitestates “Listeners may have noticed interruptions and some scheduling changes” and promised its programming would soon be back to normal.
