Richard Dean has been named assistant director of technology for noncom KUT(FM) in Austin, Texas, a newly created position. The longtime public radio professional, credited with founding NPR.org, begins at KUT July 20.
He will manage station channel strategy for the station, including launching the KUT Channels department to implement HD Radio and service strategies, and develop content streams, online services, satellite and other wireless extensions of KUT and public media
content.
The position signals KUT is developing a multi-platform strategy, said KUT Radio Director/GM J. Stewart Vanderwilt, so listeners can hear KUT content either online, on mp3 players, wireless devices or on the radio.
KUT Radio is bringing all of its technology resources – broadcast engineering, online and IT – into one department to develop a digital core that will extend content via multiple distribution channels.
KUT hopes this approach will deepen and broaden its relationship with the audience
for improved fundraising and new revenue sources as the public makes greater use of KUT services.
Most recently Dean served as director of interactive at KQED(FM) in San Francisco and new media at American Public Media/KPCC(FM) in Los Angeles. Dean is credited with establishing and managing the new media departments at both facilities. His experience also includes stints at interactive media agencies Organic Online, Inc. and Strategic Interactive Group and NPR.
