Tampa’s WSUN(FM), an alt-rock station, has turned to crowdsourcing its playlist via Listener Driven Radio’s LDR.Takeover platform.
The station has essentially gone in whole-hog — 24.7. Vice President and Market Manager Keith Lawless of WSUN owner Cox Media Group said, “We’ve created the first ‘social music experience’ in the country and have given the keys to our airwaves over to our listeners.”
Listeners are able to vote on the songs to play via Internet on the station website or Facebook page or through free Apple and Android smartphone apps that LDR built for WSUN. In addition, listeners can record song introductions.
The first week, according to an LDR release was a success with: 17,300 mobile app downloads; 178,700 mobile user sessions; over 300,000 unique voters online; 1.7 million (four votes per second in prime time) Facebook votes; and one “Open Mic” song dedication requests every three minutes.
Listeners have a song library of 1,800 songs to choose from. They can earn station reward badges for their participation.
