The National Student Media Convention wrapped up a successful four days in Philadelphia in what College Broadcasters Inc. reported as its highest turnout since 2018.

It was a banner year for 90.3 WMSC(FM) at New Jersey’s Montclair State University, as it took home radio station of the year honors, as well as three other first-place awards.

In all, 497 attendees had access to around 85 media professionals across 90 breakout and instructional sessions.

“Philadelphia never disappoints as a host of the National Student Media Convention,” CBI President Anabella Poland said.

On Oct. 16, students attended a career fair mixer to meet with recruiters from four media companies representing radio, television and live production. Several attendees followed up Oct. 17 with interviews for internships and entry-level jobs, according to a CBI release.

The convention concluded with the presentation of the National Student Production Awards, honoring standout student work across 40 categories. Judges reviewed approximately 950 entries before recognizing three finalists and one winner in each category.

You can see the full list of winners here. For the honor of radio station of the year, WMSC was the first-place winner, followed by WMUL(FM) at Marshall University, WSUM(FM) at University of Wisconsin-Madison and WZND(LP) at Illinois State University.

WMSC also took home first place for best audio hard news reporting, best special broadcast with video and best student media website.

And, last but not least, WMSC’s general manager and advisor, Poland, received the Dave Black Excellence in Advising Award in recognition of her dedication to student electronic media operations.

In addition, Jamie Lynn Gilbert of WKNC(FM) at North Carolina State University received the Joel Willer Award for outstanding service and leadership in student media.

Next year, the National Student Media Convention heads to Cleveland, Ohio.

The convention is organized by CBI, which represents approximately 290 college media outlets worldwide.
