NAB Responds to McCain/Powell, Lauds 'Outstanding' Political Coverage

Responding to the recent challenge to broadcasters to add more political news to their programming by FCC Chairman Michaell Powell and Commerce Committee Chairman Sen. John McCain, NAB President/CEO Eddie Fritts says broadcasters are doing “an outstanding job” covering campaigns.
Stations try to expand political coverage, but offers of free airtime often are rejected by candidates, Fritts states in a letter to Powell and McCain that NAB shared with reporters.
Fritts points to several broadcast groups that have announced “voluntary free air time pledges,” including Citadel Communications and others. The trade group has added a “Debate Tracker” section to its home page on the Web to help stations promote free political airtime offers.
