NAB Supports Nationwide Amber

U.S. Senators Sens. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, and Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., introduced legislation to create a national Amber alert network – “The National Amber Alert Network Act of 2002”.
NAB supports the bill. “Broadcasters are uniquely positioned to disseminate information rapidly to an entire community. No other industry is capable of broadcasters’ reach in conveying this information. Consider this: while driving in their vehicles, as many as 95 percent of adult motorists listen to their local radio stations,” stated Eddie Fritts, NAB president/CEO in testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee.
NAB and the Department of Justice developed an Amber kit that was distributed to law enforcement units and stations in 2001. Fritts said when that effort was begun last fall, there were 27 Amber plans in place. Now, 55 communities, states and regions have adopted Amber plans and more are expected by year’s end.
