NPR has chosen Balfour Beatty Construction to build its new headquarters in Washington, with construction expected to begin this fall.
The London-based construction company announced that Hickok Cole Architects has designed the finished space to house program origination centers and self-operated production studios, a 10,000-square-foot data center and technology core and a 100,000 square foot newsroom.
In addition, the building will feature a theater/production venue that will fit about 250 people for live performances and events; meeting and training rooms; an employee lounge; roof terraces and a fitness center.
We’ve reported the 330,000-square-foot building is a former telephone company warehouse on North Capitol Street. NPR has been headquartered in Washington since it was founded in 1970, and has occupied its current property on Massachusetts Ave. since 1994.
Boston Properties Inc., development manager of the project, bought NPR’s current headquarters in 2008 and is leasing it back to the broadcaster until construction is complete, expected at the end of 2012. It expects NPR to begin operations at the new location in 2013.
Balfour Beatty Construction has provided data center, telecommunications, and broadcasting construction services for organizations such as Fox Network and Engineering, NASCAR Media Group, Verizon Communications and Time Warner Cable.
