Powell on Radio, Indecency

FCC Chairman Michael Powell says radio needs to go digital to survive. Speaking before the National Press Club, Powell reiterated what he said last week at the Consumer Electronic Show that terrestrial radio needs to adopt HD Radio technology to compete in the future. The younger generation growing up today doesn’t distinguish between digital and analog, he said, to them it’s all media, and they expect to be able to use it in different ways.
Powell also said he wants Congress to increase broadcast indecency fines. Conservative groups are sending e-mails to the commission in advance of a Congressional indecency hearing set for Jan. 28.
Overall, America’s digital migration is moving forward he said, and while “We are not yet parked in the broadband driveway, but we can see it and are starting our turn.”
