Radio Broadcasters Collect Peanut Butter and More

Recent charitable efforts focus on health and children

The latest issue of the NAB’s Licensed to Serve newsletter is out. Chronicling the charitable efforts of broadcasters, Licensed to Serve has a number of good stories.

It’s often hard to classify charitable efforts of radio broadcasters because the causes are so broad.

Two Albany, Ga., stations, WGEX(FM) and WOBB(FM) raised $58,000 for their Children’s Miracle Network Radiothon, July 25–26. Both are Clear Channel stations. Another Clear Channel station, WRVW, Nashville, raised $22,500 for Musicians on Call, an organization that brings live and recorded entertainment to hospital-bound patients.

In St. Louis, Emmis station KSHE(FM), collected almost 3,000 units of blood in its annual Summer Blood Drive. Since it started in 1984, the drive has collected more than 135,000 units.

NBC Sports Radio, one of the new kids on the sports radio block, hosted the 24th annual American Century Championship, a golf tournament that raises money for several charities. The sports radio network veteran, ESPN Radio, wasn’t about to be outdone. It hosted the Don’t Give Up ESPYs V Foundation Auction. All sorts of sports memorabilia and “experiences” were auctioned off. Over $781,000 was raised by the auction for the V Foundation for Cancer Research.

In Austin, Texas, morning personalities JB and Sandy, of Entercom’s KAMX(FM), oversaw the 17th annual Bikes for Kids campaign.

And finally, in Charlotte, N.C., WBT(AM), a Greater Media operation, worked with grocer Harris-Teeter and peanut butter maker Jif, to collect peanut butter at store locations. Almost 1,100 pounds were collected for the Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina.
