Sensor Network Will Provide Traffic Info for Washington Metro, Baltimore Beltway Areas

Several Baltimore and Washington-area radio stations use Traffic.com’s traffic information. Now the state of Maryland will be able to use it to respond more quickly to accidents.
Traffic data collection and reporting firm Traffic.com Inc. said it signed an agreement with the State Highway Administration to allow it to deploy a network of wireless roadside traffic sensors. Traffic.com says it will have sensor coverage from north of Baltimore to Northern Virginia, including the busy stretch of I-95 that connects the beltways around the Baltimore and DC.
The sensor and data collection technology will be deployed on roadways as part of a public-private partnership funded by federal money to give travelers real-time traffic info. The program requires the company to provide detailed traffic information to government agencies for planning and operations.
Traffic.com will pay for construction of the sensors, operational costs and maintenance; it will share revenue with the state. It will integrate its data with existing government data provided by a sensor network already deployed in Maryland.
New sensors will provide information about vehicle speed, congestion levels and travel times to local operations centers managed by Traffic.com.
