NAB Exhibitor Viewpoint: Ben Palmer, Arrakis Systems

The virtual console is the big thing right now

Ben Palmer, Arrakis
Ben and James, the Palmer line at Arrakis Systems continues.

The spring NAB Show is approaching. Between now and then Radio World will conduct several short Q&As with manufacturers about their plans and offerings, to help you get the most out of the big annual trade show. Ben Palmer is sales manager for Arrakis Systems.

Radio World: How has business been for the company since last year’s NAB Show?

Ben Palmer: With the addition of the ARC-Talk-Blue board, and our updates to our automation product, we have seen consistent growth since last year. The economy seems to be fairly stable, and the radio market has continued to grow for our product.

RW: What are you hearing from your customers about their business outlook this year? In what areas should we expect growth or the most interesting projects?

Palmer: Sales have been up for our customers. Technology has enabled them to reach larger audiences and be more effective with their time. Internet radio, podcasts, and web presences have been a large focus for our customers.

RW: Arrakis has been active in the radio broadcast market for many years. What’s the biggest problem or challenge facing users in this segment right now?

Palmer: The challenge that will always be there for every market is to adapt to new technologies, and create a product that is relevant to their listeners. Radio is stronger than ever, and is complemented by the additions of internet radio, and smartphones. And it will continue to evolve as the technology gets better and more accessible. It’s our jobs to keep ahead of the trends.

RW: What new goodies will your company be showing? Why should attendees visit N7806?

Palmer: We are extremely excited to show off our brand new additions to our AoIP family. Simple IP has been around since 2014, and allows you to connect any audio device to the Dante AoIP network. We are now debuting at NAB two new additions — the DARC Virtual Console, along with the DARC Surface digital AoIP console.

RW: What do you anticipate will be the most significant technology trend at the 2018 NAB Show?

Palmer: The virtual console is the big thing right now. It is a software-based console that is extremely flexible, and powerful. Touchscreens are in, the virtual console is the hot product and Arrakis is there with product.

RW: This year show organizers have done some serious rearranging of the venue, expanded thematic items like pavilions and put emphasis on events and activities such as Main Stage. Any thoughts on that?

Palmer: The Main Stage in the North Hall is a welcome addition. We expect added traffic as a result of its placement, so we definitely appreciate the changes.
