UNESCO has released a comprehensive study of media laws in 10 African nations. The study, "Media Legislation in Africa: A Comparative Legal Survey" [PDF], is available free online.

The research effort was headed by Guy Berger, the head of the School of Journalism and Media Studies at Rhodes University in South Africa.

The study looked at the rules governing media in multiparty democracies across the continent, comparing the media legislation between countries, as well as against international principles and standards. The nations covered in the study are Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Mali, Mozambique, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania and Zambia.
