Tokyo Broadcasters Planning ‘World’s Tallest Tower’

Tokyo Broadcasters Planning 'World's Tallest Tower'

On the the heels of plans for a new TV tower in Chicago, the Japanese have announced plans for a record-setting structure of their own, according to the newspaper The Yomiuri Shimbun. A project team including NHK and five major Tokyo commercial broadcasters plan to build a 1,968.5-foot tower for terrestrial DTV in the Sumida-Taito area of Tokyo.
The tower, dubbed the second Tokyo Tower, will be the world’s tallest telecommunications tower, surpassing the CN Tower in Toronto, which it lists at 1,814.3 feet.
The Yomiuri Shimbun said the tower is required for “surefire one-segment broadcasting, a type of digital terrestrial broadcasting for cell phones and other receivers.”
