Tower Worker Tie-Off Campaign Starts

Worker safety comes to the fore at NATE convention

The deaths of several tower workers over the last year has drawn serious attention to the tower building and maintenance industry.

At the National Association of Tower Erectors annual convention in San Diego, NATE UNITE, the industry group association, members and others cumulatively known as the Wireless Industry Safety Task Force debuted a safety campaign — “100% Tie-Off 24/7 Awareness Campaign.”

A member of the task force, Sonya Roshek from tower builder Black & Veatch, said, “One of the early issues identified as a result of the task force’s collaborative efforts is the fact that many of the tower-site accidents that compromise safety involve situations where the tower technician was not properly tied-off to the structure.”

NATE Chairwoman Pat Cipov said, “One hundred percent tie-off is the law and needs to be strictly emphasized and adhered to at all times.”

The campaign will include PSAs, other media efforts, social media and working with state wireless groups.
