The San Francisco Amateur Radio Club helped mark the 75th anniversary of the opening of the Golden Gate Bridge by contacting other amateur radio operators this Memorial Day weekend.
Working with the California Historical Society, the club operated on five amateur bands using special call sign W6G. It transmitted from its home station at the San Francisco Veteran’s Administration Medical Center and was assisted by the Marin County Amateur Radio Club.
SFRAC’s president is Tony Dowler, K6BV; he said in the announcement that confirmation cards would be sent to stations contacted that asked for one. Stations contacting W6G on the five amateur bands will receive a certificate from the California Historical Society.
Robert Klahn, KJ6OGE, a member of the club’s board, told Radio World the event was “a huge success. We had about 20 operators running for 26 hours. We don’t have a QSO count yet, but it clearly exceeds anything the SFARC has done before, including previous Field Days.” The club has posted photos as well.
The California Historical Society has a Golden Gate Bridge exhibition open now through the middle of October. The president of CHS, Thomas R. Owens, also is a ham. A related item: The society is promoting a free multimedia eBook for iPads about the Golden Gate Bridge.
