World College Radio Day Is This Friday

Stations in more than 50 countries will participate, highlighted by 24-hour marathon

It celebrates the beauty of college radio everywhere.

The 15th annual World College Radio Day is this Friday. College radio stations in more than 50 countries will participate in the day, which is highlighted by a 24-hour global marathon.

This year’s theme for WCRD is “Tune in to the People.” Founder Dr. Rob Quicke, the director of the school of journalism and mass communications at Marshall University, said the theme is a reflection that through listening, we can “build bridges of respect and understanding across borders.”

The celebration features the 24-hour marathon streaming on Live365, which kicks off at 6 p.m. Eastern Time on Thursday from UCC 98.3 FM at University College Cork in Ireland

Contributions from participating stations half-hour blocks are scheduled from student radio outlets in Costa Rica, India, Australia, the U.S., Italy, Ghana, Malaysia, Spain and Mexico.

This year’s WCRD president is Gabriel Menchero, the general manager of Frecuencia CEM at Tecnológico de Monterrey in Mexico. Menchero said that at a time when the world faces divisions and challenges, the role of college radio is more essential than ever.

Other college stations worldwide will be acknowledging WCRD on Friday throughout their regular programming.

It’s not too late to register to be a part of the day, Quicke said, and it is free for all participating stations.

By registering, college stations get access to content that can be played on stations, including sweepers, liners and interviews.

World College Radio Day is an outreach event of the College Radio Foundation, which supports student radio including online, cable, carrier current, FM and AM outlets.
