Dummy Loads for Dummies

Sneak Peek: Kintronic handles high power

Kintronic Laboratories doesn’t mind that dummy loads have long been the butt of engineer jokes. They’ll keep developing new ones.

For the 2011 NAB Show, two new ones will be in the Kintronic booth.

The larger is the 600 kW+ Medium-Wave Dummy Load, a new design for high-power situations in 530–1705 kHz. The power rating: 400 + 125% continuous modulation with impedance: 50 ohms nominal, VSWR <1.05:1. It includes adjustment for optimization. Motorized and fixed louvers are available along with fixed dampers. Additional features include input current meter with remote output, air interlock for each fan, resistor stack thermal overload sensor and current overload fuses on each fan motor.

Carrying the same overall features, the 150 kW+ Medium-Wave Dummy Load has a power rating 100+ 125% continuous modulation.

Also new to be seen at the Kintronic Labs booth is the latest from Austin Insulators Inc.

The A-L810RF is a steady-burning red LED obstruction light. The A-L864RF is a medium-intensity red LED flashing beacon.

Features include RF-hardened design suitable for operation in high-powered MF to VLF systems. LEDs last up to five times longer and utilize up to 90 percent less power than older incandescent lamps, according to the company. The constant light output meets or exceeds regulatory requirements across input voltages of ±10 percent nominal. The lamp assembly and housing are weather- and corrosion-resistant. The lights allow direct replacement of existing incandescent or other light sources.
