Malaysia’s RTM Uses Inovonics for Its Revamp

The country’s public broadcaster operates 23 regional radio networks

From the Radio World “Who’s Buying What” page: In Malaysia, the country’s public broadcaster, Radio Television of Malaysia, is undertaking a large-scale upgrade with modulation monitors and rebroadcast receivers from Inovonics.

RTM operates 23 regional radio networks across Malaysia, which is the 19th largest country in Asia.

At RTM Kebah in Malaysia, the network is using an Inovonics rebroadcast monitor to retrieve an over-the-air signal on 97.5 FM.

RTM is using Inovonics Broadcast for monitoring at the revamped transmitter sites. The broadcaster installed 35 units of the Inovonics Modulation Monitor 541, while it has installed 57 units of the FM Rebroadcast Receiver 640.

Inovonics said that RTM’s FM transmitter system had an operational age of approximately 10 years. As a result, it said the broadcaster proceeded with a comprehensive overhaul. What it is calling its “phase two” upgrade involved the replacement of outdated equipment. This included transmitters, antennas, feeder cables, power interface equipment and combiners.

RTM issued three tenders in Q3 of 2023 to cover its different regions. They included:

  • The North-Central region, which includes 12 stations
  • The East-South region, which includes 14 stations
  • The Sabah-Sarawak (Borneo) region, which includes nine stations

The tenders were awarded at the end of 2023 and installation projects began shortly thereafter. RTM said it expects the project to stay on time despite the logistical challenges several of the remote areas the transmitter sites operate from pose. RTM suggested a completion timeframe of 18 months.

JAA Systems, a local dealer, is working with RTM and integrator partners and installers in Malaysia throughout the implementation of this project, according to Inovonics. The overhaul is overseen by RTM’s project department.
