All India Radio Acquiring Two High Power DRM Transmitters

Government-owned broadcaster All India Radio (AIR) says it has confirmed an order for a pair of 1MW DRM-capable medium wave transmitters slated for installation at transmitter plants in Chinsurah (West Bengal) and Rajkot (Gujrat).

Intended to provide service to a large portion of the Indian sub-continent and beyond, the new all-solid star units will offer selectable DRM digital, analog or simulcast transmission modes.

News of the purchase was released at the Broadcast Engineering Society (BES) India’s conference in New Deli at the end of January. Although no vendor was specified in a DRM press release, Thomson is known to have submitted a bid to All India for two DRM transmitters in summer 2009.

All India has been operating with DRM technology since 2008, using existing 250kW analog transmitters retrofitted to accommodate DRM.
