U.K. Government, BBC and Private Firms Fund New DAB Transmission Facilities

LONDON�Vaizey MP, the U.K. Minister for Culture and the Digital Economy, officially turned on the new local DAB expansion program at SMMT Connected, a major car conference hosted by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders at the QEII Centre in London, according toa516digital.com.

The expansion program will extend the coverage of local DAB stations to more than 90 percent of the U.K. population, in addition to adding coverage to over 4100 miles of roads.� 50 localities will benefit from the 182 new transmitters being built-out byArqiva, the communications infrastructure and media services company.� The program also includes modifications at a further 49 sites, making local stations available on DAB to an additional 8 million listeners and drivers across the U.K. for the first time.

The U.K. government, the BBC and commercial mux operators are funding the program, and when complete, the FM-to-DAB switchover coverage criteria will have been met, according to the same article.

The BBC is also building�162 new digital radio transmitters to improve national DAB coverage for its national network stations. This work is already halfway complete, and will improve coverage of BBC national network stations from 94 percent to 97 percent of the population by the end of this year.�
