ABC News’ White House Correspondent Ann Compton will retire in September.
So says VP/GM for ABC News Radio Steve Jones in a note to colleagues. He said that Compton hinted at the subject earlier. “She told me how amazing it was being a new grandmother and suggested that, after 40 years at ABC News, perhaps it was time to transition to the next phase of her life.”
There will be a celebration of Compton’s career next month, according to Jones, who adds that she wants to continue to cover the White House for now “without distraction.”
Politico reports Compton says she’s seen others stay too long in the job and now is a good time to go as the business changes. She was 27 when she started on the White House beat, and covered seven presidents.
Compton will take one last overseas trip covering President Obama — the NATO Summit in Wales — before leaving the job.
Compton is active on the lecture circuit; in fact, she spoke at last year’s Radio Show in Orlando.
