Bush Supports Indecency Curbs for Satellite, Cable

President Bush said Thursday he favors applying FCC indecency regulations to cable and satellite. Speaking to the American Society of Newspaper Editors meeting in Washington, Bush said, “We ought to help parents, not hinder them.”
But at the same time, the president said, “We’re a free society. Let the marketplace make the decision. If you don’t like something, don’t watch it.”
Currently, FCC standards apply only to over-the-air radio and television. Recently new FCC Chairman Kevin Martin said he favors self-regulation by the satellite and cable industries.
