Letter: An Internet-Only Future for the BBC? That’s a Dubious Move

I have little faith the BBC can pull this off, says a reader

This letter to the editor is in response to Radio World Editor in Chief Paul McLane’s recently-published article “A BBC Without Broadcast?” Comment on this or any article. Email radioworld@futurenet.com.

Hello,

I read the column today that the UK BBC is thinking about stopping over-the-air broadcasting. This is a dubious move.

When I read BBC Director-General Tim Davie stating “A switch-off of broadcast will and should happen over time, and we should be active in planning for it.” it had me laughing. All this would involved making sure UK households have access to fixed-line broadband and 5G cellular. Yeah, sure.

All of the above will require money to do all the work so that the UK public will have access to BBC’s programming. I don’t know what public the BBC director is talking about. Does this public include the less fortunate or the poor? I have little faith the BBC can pull this off.

Of course, not mentioned is the fact that if the internet is interrupted for some reason, how is the public going to get their news and entertainment? Someone’s head is in the sky.
