American Tower has acquired the transmission space of one of Chicago’s marquee properties, the John Hancock Center. The building is the sixth tallest in the United States, at more than 1,100 feet (1,500 feet to the top of the broadcast masts).
A release said that American Tower acquired the 93rd and 97th floors along with the rooftop. It also notes that the acquisition includes 34,000 of space for broadcast and telecom equipment. According to ChicagoRealEstateDaily.com, the amount was in the neighborhood of $70 million; it said the building owners previously had defaulted on debt so the property had been seized by creditors Deutsche Bank and NorthStar Realty Finance.
According to Radiomap.us, FM stations WBEZ, WILV, WIQI, WLUP, WOJO, WQKX, WUSN and WVAZ broadcast from the two masts atop the building.
Television stations, the city of Chicago and wireless telecom companies also make use of the facilities.
