An LPFM station licensed to Hollywood, Fla., has been sent a notice of violation by the FCC’s Enforcement Bureau for operating with a transmitter power output exceeding 1,000 watts.

The notice stems from a May 2024 inspection, when an agent from the bureau’s Miami office visited the transmitter site of 96.1 WZPP(LP), which is licensed with an ERP of 48 watts.

WZPP airs programming as the “Voice of the Caribbean,” which is also broadcast on 92.7 WZOP(LP) in Fort Lauderdale.

The Voice of the Caribbean had also aired on 94.3 WQPN(LP) in Miami, though that station is currently silent due to “disagreements with its program supplier.”

WZPP is licensed to the Broward Jewish Alliance and its transmitter is located on NW 210th St. in Miami.

During the visit, the agent observed that WZPP was operating with a transmitter power output of 1,022 watts — approximately 811% of the station’s authorized power.

FCC rules require that the transmitter power output of an LPFM station with an authorized transmitter power output above 10 watts must not fall below 90% or exceed 105% of the authorized value. In WZPP’s case, its authorized transmitter power output is 126 watts.

As a result of the notice, the Broward Jewish Alliance has 20 days to submit a written statement addressing the violation. The response must include relevant facts, a description of corrective actions taken, a timeline for completion and measures to prevent recurrence.

Radio World has reached out to WZPP’s legal representation for comment.
