Harris Adds to Afghan Transmission Site

BBG adds additional generator to contract for recently completed station

According to a Notice of Intent filed by the Broadcasting Board of Governors’ International Broadcasting Bureau (BBG/IBB), Harris Corp. will enhance a remote medium-wave transmission system for around-the-clock operation.

BBG/IBB directs civilian international broadcasting for the United States, including Voice of America, Radio Free Asia, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty and Radio Sawa.

According to the notice, the existing 200 kW medium-wave system will be outfitted with an additional Caterpillar C-18 generator and fuel storage. Harris recently completed design and construction of the site, which is described as being “in a remote location of Afghanistan.”

According to comments on the Media Network blog, the transmitter in question appears to be operating on 621 kHz and transmitting programming from Mashaal Radio across the Afghan-Pakistan border to the Northwest Frontier Province and Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan.
