New Broadcast Engineer Course

SBE University looks at engineers and station management

SBE University, the online educational arm of the Society of Broadcasters, is ringing the schoolhouse bell once again.

The latest entry is “Perspectives I: Broadcast Engineers and Station Management.

SBE says the course “is intended to provide the broadcast engineer with some of the perspectives and responsibilities of financial management.” Furthermore, that financial considerations are as important to a station as a station’s engineering plant so engineers are important players in a station’s financial health whether they realize it or not.

It will also take a look at engineers as managers, even if they are simply a department manager. There will be job description considerations, personnel management experiences, workflow responsibilities and many other managerial practices to be examined.

Gary Ellingson is the instructor. He is director of engineering for Northwestern Media, a subsidiary of the University of Northwestern.

The course has no prerequisites. It costs $89 for SBE members and $139 for nonmembers. It counts for one credit for SBE recertification.
