Phil Joiner, who worked for four decades in broadcast engineering and sales, died Sept. 29. He was 79.
Most recently, Joiner worked for RF Specialties of Pennsylvania, running its Philadelphia office until his passing. His colleague Paul Shutack shared details of Joiner’s life with Radio World.
Joiner served four years in the U.S. Air Force in the late 1960s and early 1970s. After working in the microcomputer industry later that decade, he attended Mercer County Community College in West Windsor, N.J., to pursue a career in broadcast engineering.
He would spend two years working for the U.S. Navy as a television studio engineer before returning to Mercer County Community College in 1988 as assistant chief engineer for the school’s WWFM(FM), “The Classical Network.” He also taught technical courses for the college’s radio and TV production program.
Joiner became chief engineer for WWFM in 2003, serving in that role until his retirement in 2009. During his tenure, the network expanded its coverage across New Jersey, including the addition of Class B1 89.1 WWCJ(FM) in Cape May, licensed in 2000.
Following his retirement from the college, Joiner worked as a broadcast consultant in the Philadelphia area, including work for Daystar Television.
His RF Specialties colleagues noted that Joiner’s passions outside broadcasting included nature and wildlife. He was also an accomplished bagpiper who regularly performed in full uniform at special events.
