
Ask a radio listener who runs their favorite station, and you’ll get predictable answers: the morning host, the news anchor, maybe the program director. Almost nobody says the engineer.
But every broadcast, stream, podcast, HD Radio channel and connected-car experience runs on infrastructure that has to work exactly right, every time. The people who keep it that way are usually invisible right up until something breaks. Then suddenly they’re the only ones anyone’s looking for.
The new reality of radio engineering
Radio engineering used to mean transmitters, antennas and studio gear. That work hasn’t gone away, but it’s now maybe a third of the job.
Today’s technical teams are also running IP networks, managing cloud services, hardening systems against cyberattacks, maintaining streaming platforms, and integrating hybrid radio standards.
A station isn’t really an RF operation anymore. It’s a technology company that happens to broadcast.
The best engineering work is the kind no one ever hears about. A studio migration that doesn’t knock anyone off air. A vulnerability patched before it’s exploited. A failover system that kicks in so cleanly that listeners never notice the primary feed dropped.
Engineering succeeds by not happening. It’s measured by the disaster that didn’t occur, which makes it a strange thing to get credit for, since the metric is silence.
Compare that to sales, where a signed contract or a ratings win is easy to point out. An engineer’s biggest win of the year might be a week without an issue.
That asymmetry shapes how these teams get evaluated, and not in their favor. A programming decision that boosts ratings gets a clap. A network redesign that prevents an outage during an ice storm gets a line item in a budget report, if it gets mentioned at all.
Strategic value
When stations talk about growth, the conversation usually centers on content, audience and sales, and for good reason: Those drive revenue. But look at what actually gets a station through a digital transformation, a security overhaul or an infrastructure migration, and it’s the technical team running point.
Those projects change what a station is, not just how it runs. Treating them as routine upkeep undersells what they actually are: strategic bets that technical staff are executing.
Career path challenge
Sales and programming have obvious career tracks. Engineering often doesn’t. An engineer can take on more infrastructure, lead bigger projects and become indispensable to station operations, and still have no defined path to the next title.
That’s not one manager’s oversight. It’s an industry-wide gap, and it’s going to matter more as the job gets more technical, not less.
Who will build radio’s future?
A lot of the engineers who built and maintained today’s stations are approaching retirement, and the pipeline behind them looks thin.
According to one report, the industry will need roughly 5,100 new broadcast engineers over the next decade, driven by an estimated 6,200 retirements, with the shortage hitting hardest in RF, the discipline that keeps transmitters and antennas running.
The Society of Broadcast Engineers’ own membership numbers tell the same story. Nearly 74% of working members are 46 or older, and the average age is 54. Of the 500 to 600 new members SBE brings in each year, only about a quarter are under 31.
This isn’t an abstract problem. Public radio stations in small and mid-size markets have reported opening a search for a chief engineer and coming up nearly empty, with only a handful of applicants and candidates turning down offers because the pay doesn’t compete with what the same skills earn in general IT or telecom.
When that happens, some stations end up leaning on retired engineers working part time at reduced rates, or on outside contractors, rather than filling the role outright. Neither is a long-term fix.
Part of the problem is visibility. Students studying networking, IT or cybersecurity often have no idea radio is even an option for that skillset. A career in broadcast engineering rarely comes up in a computer science or electrical engineering program, even though the work now overlaps heavily with both fields.
Fixing that means more than buying new equipment. It means showcasing what technical teams actually do, building real advancement paths and treating this work as a strategic function rather than a support function.
It also means paying for the hybrid skill set the job now demands. An engineer who can troubleshoot a transmitter and secure a network and manage a streaming platform is not one job. It’s three, done by one person.
The road ahead
AI, cloud workflows, connected cars, hybrid radio, cybersecurity: The list of things reshaping broadcasting all runs through the same team. Getting through that shift will require technical staff who can bridge old-school RF with the rest, and there aren’t enough of them being trained to replace those heading toward retirement.
Most listeners will never know an engineer’s name. Most will never see the systems keeping their favorite station on air. But the reliability they take for granted, the app that loads instantly, the stream that never buffers, the signal that comes in clean in a moving car, has someone’s fingerprints all over it.
