The Radio Hall of Fame has recognized the director of news and programming for WTOP(FM) with a 2022 “One to Watch” award.

The Museum of Broadcast Communications made the announcement that Julia Ziegler was named the recipient of the award, which was created in 2018 in honor of Art Laboe, the 2012 Radio Hall of Fame inductee who passed away this year at the age of 97.

The Hall of Fame’s nominating committee selects a promising radio personality or team that has demonstrated ratings success, audience growth and had an impact on the community. Ziegler was selected after reviewing her journey at WTOP, which began in 2002 when she was brought on as an intern.

Since then, she has served as the WTOP digital news director, where she oversaw the creation of the station’s digital news products including WTOP.com, the WTOP app, social media, video and various podcasts. She was also part of the team that created and produced the award-winning true crime podcast “22 Hours: An American Nightmare.”

Prior to her roles at WTOP, Ziegler served as managing editor of sister station FederalNewsRadio.com and as executive producer at Talk Radio 3WT and Washington Post Radio.

“Julia has literally done it all at a station that is one of the most highly respected in the nation,” said Dennis Green, chair of the Radio Hall of Fame nominating committee, pointing to her invaluable role in blazing the station’s path forward in both digital and social media arenas.

The Radio Hall of Fame will recognize its 2022 class of inductees at the in-person 2022 Radio Hall of Fame induction ceremony on Nov. 1 at the Radisson Blu Aqua Hotel in Chicago. A portion of ticket sales to the event will be offered as a tax-deductible charitable donation to the Museum of Broadcast Communications.

“From intern, to being on the desk at TOP, to working with Washington Post Radio, to being the digital lead at Federal News Network, to running to WTOP.com, to now overseeing the entire WTOP news operation, Julie has brought an energy and dedication that is unparalleled,” said Joel Oxley, senior vice president and general manager of Hubbard DC.
