Pureplay streaming service Rdio has added 24 markets to its roster, for a total of 85 countries and territories.
As part of its expansion across the Caribbean, Central America and Asia Pacific, Rdio is partnering with mobile phone network provider Digicel to create an offering designed to customize the streaming experience for Digicel customers in each market.
Digicel will offer prepaid data customers 30 minutes of free Rdio Internet listening per day on their smartphones without chalking up additional data charges. Customers can hear Rdio through an app on their smartphones. Digicel will also be Rdio’s sales and marketing arm in the joint Digicel-Rdio markets.
Digicel and Rdio will collaborate on playlist curation in the new 24 markets to add local influence.
Digicel says it has 14 million customers.
Rdio CEO Anthony Bay calls the deal with Digicel “huge” and says the company will be instrumental in shaping the streaming experience.
The addition follows Rdio’s recent big launch in India.
