Surround Sound on Wheels

Aupeo!, Panasonic and Fraunhofer work on streaming surround sound for the car

Internet-based music service Aupeo, entertainment equipment maker Panasonic and codec developer Fraunhofer are working together on streaming surround sound in automobiles.

Aupeo already uses Fraunhofer MPEG Surround codec for its surround sound Internet streaming. According to a release, some recent audio head units developed by Panasonic’s Automotive Systems Co. of America can handle the Aupeo surround streams to create in-car surround sound as part of Panasonic’s Connected Infotainment Platform.

The release also stated that the Fraunhofer codec should maintain efficiency over 3G/4G and Wi-Fi networks, which are the avenues for Internet traffic into vehicles.

Aupeo and Fraunhofer will be at the CES show next week, demonstrating Internet-delivered surround sound and Panasonic’s automotive arm will be showing the Aupeo/Fraunhofer/Panasonic surround feature at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit this month.
