Willis Must Surrender Licenses

Willis Must Surrender Licenses

If you accumulate thousands of dollars worth of unpaid fees to the commission, you can lose your stations. That’s what’s happening to Bishop Willis. Under a Consent Decree, Norfolk-based Willis must surrender four licenses to satisfy more than $84,000 in fines. The stations are: KLRG, Little Rock. KVLA, Vidalia, La.; WCRY, Fuquay-Varina, N.C.; and WSVE, Jacksonville, Fla. Willis has five days to surrender the licenses.
He has two pending applications to assign licenses for WWCA, Gary, Ind. and WJNS(FM), Yazoo City, Mich. The agency will renew those licenses, and then Willis must sell those and apply the proceeds to the $85,000 as well as other unpaid fees and taxes. Every six months he must for the remainder of the terms of his remaining six licenses, he must certify that each station is in compliance with FCC rules.
The case stems from 1999. Willis told the commission he tried to correct the violations, but has had a “serious illness.” The commission stated that re-inspections in 2003 showed “a number of violations” remained outstanding.
