Cogeco Communications to Become MVNO in Canada

The parent company of North America’s eighth largest cable operator appears to be setting its sights on an entry into the Canadian wireless market

QUINCY, Mass. —The parent company of North America’s eighth largest cable operator appears to be setting its sights on an entry into the Canadian wireless market.

Cogeco Communications owns the Atlantic Broadband brand in the United States and also operates a landline network in parts of Ontario and Quebec. The company’s CEO said recently that the company “would likely join its larger Canadian rivals by deploying some kind of mobile service,” according to fiercewireless. Most of Canada’s other landline and cable operators have already entered the wireless market in some form.

Cogeco’s Louis Audet said recently that “the time is right for Cogeco to enter Canada’s wireless market because Canadians are looking for additional options in mobile.”

The nature of 5G network technology is such that the company can piggyback the new network facilities on their current ones, according to the same article. He also said the company would likely bid on 600 MHz spectrum in Canada’s upcoming license auction and would then use a hybrid MVNO approach to the wireless market, meaning that the company would operate some of its own network equipment while relying on a mobile network from another company for wider coverage in Canada.

* Note that an earlier version of this article incorrectly stated that Atlantic Broadband intended to enter Canada, rather than parent company Cogeco.
