Australian Broadcasters Develop RadioApp

Over 250 of Australia's commercial and public radio stations have joined forces to develop an app that will be launched in late November

MELBOURNE, Australia Over 250 of Australia’s commercial and public radio stations have joined forces to develop an app that will be launched in late November. The RadioApp has been developed by All in Media and was introduced at the Commercial Radio Australia conference in Melbourne on Friday morning (Oct. 7). It will be available free at the Apple and Google stores and will allow listeners to find a radio station “no matter what platform or device” they use, according to smh.com.au.

Several radio station and network-specific streaming apps already exist, such as TuneIn Radio, iHeart Radio and the ABC’s own radio streaming service; however, RadioApp is the creation of strictly Australian networks.

About 12 million people listen to Australian radio stations every week in capital cities, and Australians listen to six hours a week of radio through streaming, on average, according to research group GfK. CRA recently released new data showing radio has a 65 percent share of Australians listening, with online streaming services like Spotify and iTunes accounting for just 10 percent of listening.
