City of Barcelona Adds Wi-Fi to 1,000+ City Buses

The addition of public Wi-Fi to the buses nearly doubles the number of access points when combined with the 1,100 hot spots already deployed there

BARCELONA The city of Barcelona, working with Wi-Fi service management firm Aptilo Networks, has extended Wi-Fi connectivity to its fleet of 1,003 city buses.

The addition of public Wi-Fi to the buses nearly doubles the number of access points when combined with the 1,100 hot spots already deployed around the Mediterranean destination, reports rcrwireless.com. Local competition rules limit throughput to 256 kilobits per second, except in libraries, museums and the like.

Users register for Barcelona Wi-Fi on their first visit through a captive portal in Aptilo Service Management Platform adapted to the screen size of the users device. Users are verified in a one-time procedure through a link emailed to their account. They are automatically connected to the Wi-Fi network upon subsequent visits, as Aptilo SMP remembers user identifying information from the first verification.
