The Sunsetting of FM Continues Apace in Norway

NRK will terminate FM broadcasts in southern and western Norway as scheduled on June 21

OSLO Norwegian Public Broadcaster NRK will terminate ??FM broadcasts in southern and western Norway as scheduled on June 21. After that date, the only over-the-air access to NRK in Sogn og Fjordane, Hordaland, Rogaland, Vest-Agder and Aust-Agder will be via DAB+ radio, according to ntbinfo.no.

P4 and Radio Norway will cease FM on Sept. 15 in those same counties. Local FM stations will continue until at least 2022.

Data derived from Kantar TNS Digital Radio Survey from June 2017 shows that 73% of all radio listeners now hear digital radio every day more than 2 million Norwegians and that DAB is the most widely used digital platform for radio. (62% report using OTA DAB, 22% use internet and 12% use the TV receiver to listen to the radio.) Fifty-two % use FM. The numbers take into account that some are listening to several sources of sound during one day. Thirty-two % had DAB by car in February 2017; by June that figure hit 38%, according tonyhetstrommet.no.
