Last week I looked at some freebies and discounts for Las Vegas, and with the NAB Show around the corner, this is a reminder that last week was considered the “low point” for airfare travel. I waited from Friday to this past Monday and saw an increase of $190! (So much for cheaper fuel!) On a related note, I was able to book six nights in decent strip motels for $254.80 this year (with some of the perks & discounts). In addition, a free buffet at Aria, free Beatles “Love” show ticket, and $50 in free play at New York New York. This week’s Off the Beaten Path includes a couple of updates for previous Off The Beaten Paths.
Free Radio Programming Update
Free programming for LPFM, LPAM, etc. LifeTalk Radio Network
(From Len Doughty) Homecoming Radio does an hour-long program that can be broadcast daily or weekly for free.
It should be noted that this is not an endorsement of the companies selling this gear, just noted that it appears there are some pretty good deals. Also, look for something called DRMO at any local military base. That is the Defense Reutilization and Marketing Office. Often gear, even new, is past its “shelf life” in the military and gets sold for pennies on the dollar. Don’t forget to check your local university to look for their auctions (especially those with NPR and PBS stations). Just a reminder too that Radio World’s classified section often has some good deals in the back of the paper.
Surplus government gear can be found at GovDeals and Government Liquidation. Sometimes broadcast gear can be found.
Radio Automation System Additions
A few weeks ago in this column, I listed as many radio automation systems I could remember and find. I neglected a few others including some really well-known and loved systems. Here are a few more to add to the list of many radio automation options.
OtsAV Radio DJ
Rivendell (a Linux system)
And finally …
With the East Coast getting nailed this week with snow and bad weather, IF you are capable of digging out and getting a flight, here are some beautiful destinations (though a few also have snow).
