The Mays family of Clear Channel fame are not the only successful Texas radio clan with that moniker.
The homonymous Mayes family has had its share of radio success in Texas. Recognizing that, the Texas Association of Broadcasters is honoring Wendell Mayes Jr. with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the association’s Annual Convention and Trade Show in August.
Mayes, 93, is the son of the late radio station owner Wendell Mayes. Over the many decades Mayes won a Peabody Award, served in several offices of the TAB, including president (1964) and Pioneer Broadcaster of the Year in 1978; won accolades and awards from other Texas broadcasting associations such as Broadcaster of the Year in 1989 from the Texas Association of Broadcast Educators.
Mayes was inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame in 2002.
He also served as a director of the National Association of Broadcasters (1969–73) and vice chairman (1971–73).
Mayes has also been involved in nonbroadcast businesses, including banks, motels and soft drinks. In addition, he has long been involved with the American Diabetes Association, including a stint as its chairman (1974–77) and was president of the International Diabetes Federation, 1991–94. He has multiple awards for recognition and outstanding service from the ADA.
