Letter: Snowville Was Full of History … and Raccoons

A reader recalls trying to secure the Brecksville, Ohio, building from pesky intruders

Greetings broadcasters,

I have worked in the 8200 Snowville building twice now during my 47-year career as a radio broadcast engineer mainly in the Cleveland area, but early on during 1973 and 1974 worked in Jacksonville, Fla., at the well known WAPE-AM 690 kHz, better known as “THE BIG APE.”

I was employed by Gannet Radio in 1984–1985 when they owned WWWE(AM) 1100 and WDOK(FM) 102.1.  Also when Jacor, and later Clear Channel (later becoming iHeartMedia), owned WTAM(AM) 1100. I then hung up my hat during August 2021 and finally retired.

I was amazed last year driving by the 8200 Snowville road site and witnessed a demolition crew tearing down the old Carl Smith building.

For sure that building has history for nearly a century. [I] spent many days roaming through that building as well … including, in later years, trying to ward off numerous raccoons that would find their way into that building. Did I succeed? Well, perhaps somewhat. Too many holes associated with that building, and I finally abandoned attempting to seal all the small holes which allowed these urchins to enter.

Guess I was anxious or ambitious to attempt warding off these rascals.

I’ve known Mark Krieger for years and even had the pleasure to work with Mark for a while and have known him to be a real professional in broadcast engineering.

Good luck Mark with your retirement as well.
